What's That Noise? The Drip That Keeps You Awake.

Faucets are one of the most important and most used part of the water delivery system in your home.

Most home faucet installations used for baths, showers, sinks and basins provide separate hot and cold water valves.  When they work, all is good, but when they fail... well... don't get us started.

Leaky faucets are down-right annoying. Over time, you might notice staining in the sink or shower. Then you'll notice that there's a constant drop or splash of water under the spigot. Compound this over a long period of time and you could lose hundreds of gallons of water per year. A drip in one faucet leaking 3 drops per minute will waste 12,960 drops per day which adds up to over 300 gallons per year. Check the numbers for yourself here.

How They Work

The first screw-down faucets were made in 1845. Many older faucets use a soft rubber or neoprene washer which is screwed down onto a valve seat in order to stop the flow. This is called a "globe valve" and, while it gives a leak-proof seal and solid adjustment of flow, both the rubber washer and the valve seat are subject to wear over time. It's just the nature of the product. Eventually, there's not a tight enough seal formed when the faucet is in the closed position. Thus, resulting in a leaking tap. The washer can be replaced and the valve seat resurfaced, but unfortunately globe valves are never maintenance-free. Most faucet handles on residential homes are connected to the valve shaft and fastened down with a screw. Like a majority of appliances in your life, faucets contain moving parts and they break and wear out over time.
